Namasté or Namaskar (नमस्ते [nʌmʌsˈteː] in Nepali and Hindi (from internal sandhi between namaḥ and te) is an Indian greeting, which is used to say Hello in English. The meaning can be quite different, however. For example, Buddhist monks in the High Himalyas translate Namaste as "I salute the potential to become a God that lies within you".
Sanskrit na reflects a simple negation. Maḥ points to ego, referring "I" and "my". Thus namaḥ means "bow, obeisance, reverential salutation, adoration to your inner truth", but not next to your ego, or more simply "not me". Te is the dative of the personal pronoun tvam, "you". A literal translation of namaḥ te is thus "reverential salutation to your inner", or more simply "not to me, but to you (I bow)".
